What’s Up with The Biggest Tree Contest

On April 24, Keep Shelby Beautiful announced the results of THE 2010 BIGGEST TREE CONTEST during the Art on the Square Festival. The BIGGEST TREE Contest was a way to celebrate the City’s tree heritage.

First place award for the BIGGEST TREE in 2010 went to:  STEVE  MORRIS, who nominated a tree measuring 18 feet and 1 inch in circumference. The tree is located at the corner of McBrayer St. and West Graham St. The property owner is Harpers Chapel Baptist Church.

2nd Place:  Braxton Clifton

Second Place award went to: BRAXTON CLIFTON, who nominated a tree measuring 17 feet  5 inches in circumference. The tree is located at 1321 Kings Circle, in the back yard. The property owner is Richard Addis

3rd Place: Jake Appling

3rd Place: Jake Appling

Third Place award went  to: JAKE APPLING ,who nominated a tree measuring 16 feet and 11.5 inches in circumference. The tree is located at 421 South Washington St., in the backyard. The property owner is Jenny Seykora.

Fourth Place award went to:  RILEY TAYLOR, who nominated a tree measuring 16 feet and 8 inches in circumference. The tree is located at 107 Park Circle. The property owners are Dr. & Mrs. Richard Bowling.

There were 15 nominations submitted for Shelby’s first Biggest Tree Contest. The trees were judged on their Circumference Breast Height  or CBH which is measured at 4 ½ feet above ground level. The tree with the largest CBH was the winner

The three judges who measured the trees to verify the CBH were:

1) Trey Warrick of Shelby Nusery – an NC State graduate in Horticulture, a certified arborist.

2) Ken Neff – Neff Tree Service of Shelby – certified arborist, 35 years of experience.

3) Matthew Martin – Martin’s Cabinets – a NC State graduate in Wood Science, who is a cabinet maker.

Keep Shelby Beautiful awarded framed certificates for first place through fourth place and each finalist also  received a tree donated by Fred Blackley, Landscape Architect and advisor to KSB.
