The Forestview Jaguar golf team won the 3A West Regional Championship last week at Cedar Rock. Will Long led the way with a 72 while Will Blalock added a 73. It was the second straight regional championship for the Jaguars. It’s hard to win one state championship and even harder to win back to back. But that’s what the Forestview Jaguar golf team did Tuesday at the Foxfire Golf and Country Club in Foxfire Village. The Jags won their second straight North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A State Golf Championship. Burlington Williams placed second. Will Long of Forestview shot a 66 in the final round to take medalist honors by one stroke over Nick Stafford of South Point. The Red Raiders finished fourth. Meanwhile the North Lincoln Knights placed second in the state 2A golf tournament at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines. The Knights finished four strokes behind state champion Newton Conover. Shelby placed third.

Several area high school baseball teams are still in the chase for a state championship. Highland Tech advanced to the third round of the state 1A playoffs with an 8-0 win Tuesday over Hiwassee Dam. Highland Tech will now face Lincoln Charter. Shelby advances in the state 2A playoffs with a 4-0 win over Bandys on Tuesday. The Golden Lions will now take on Smokey Mountain at Smokey Mountain on Friday night. That game will be heard on both WOHS-1390 AM and WCSL-1590 AM Friday night. West Lincoln also advanced with an 11-9 win Tuesday night over Draughn. The Rebels will be home Friday night to face East Rutherford who advanced with a 7-1 win over Bunker Hill. That game can be heard on 1050 AM WLON.

Hats off to former South Point Red Raider Jordan Edgerton. Edgerton was named first team all conference at third base for UNC-Pembroke. Edgerton hit .383 with nine home runs and 53 RBIs.

Ashbrook’s 4×100 meter relay boys team and Forestview’s 4×100 meter girls relay team each won silver medals at the 3A state track and field championships last week.

The Ashbrook Greenwave girls soccer team has advanced in the state playoffs after an overtime win last Saturday over Fred T. Foard. Ashbrook is now 18-1-2 on the season.

Gardner Webb’s Samantha Meenagham along with Kellie Beres were both named to the College Sports Madness 2013 Big South All Conference Team. It was the third straight year to be named to the team for Meenagham as she hit .477 at second base for the Lady Bulldogs. It was the second straight year for the award for Beres after hitting .349 in the outfield for the Lady Bulldogs.

The Shelby Golden Lions boys golf team won the 2A Western Regional Golf Championshp last week at Glen Oaks. Newton Conover placed second followed by North Lincoln. Shelby’s Elliott Grayson won medalist honors after firing a two under par 70.

Shelby’s Marshall Parker won the state 2A singles championship last week after a 6-0, 6-0 win over Brian Freilburghouse of Carrboro.

Shelby’s Eddie Holbrook and Jim Horn were both inducted into the North Carolina American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame last week in Hickory. Both were instrumental in landing the American Legion Baseball World Series in Shelby. Veterans Field/Keeter Stadium is currently under a 2.5 million dollar upgrade including the Plaza of Champions at the stadium entrance.

For the second straight year, the Shelby Golden Lions boys track team won the 2A Western Regionals last week at Bunker Hill.

West Lincoln’s Clay Alguire has signed a letter of intent to wrestle at Belmont Abbey College. Alguire was the 2013 state champion in his weight class and was named Most Valuable Wrestler in the regional and state tournaments and the South Piedmont Conference 1A/2A Wrestler of the Year.

Cherryville’s Terry Whisnant is leaving Florida State. Whisnant has stated he is transferring to either East Carolina or Coastal Carolina. Whisnant played in 55 of the Seminoles’ 69 games and averaged 3.8 points per game. He started 19 games last year. Whisnant will have to sit out one season before becoming eligible at either school.

West Lincoln’s Cameron High has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Tusculum College. Last season he was 8-1 with a 1.53 earned run average and 88 strikeouts.

For the second year in a row, Jimmie Johnson went to victory lane at the annual All-Star Race held at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The 90 mile race is broke into four 20 mile segments with a fifth and final 10 lap shootout. A Million Dollars was on the line for the race winner with an additional Million promised to the driver who could win all five segments. Johnson, who is no stranger to victory lane at CMS, did not win any of the first four segments. Those segments were won by the Busch Brothers who each won two. Johnson did however manage to lead the final and most important segment. In fact, the five time champ led all 10 laps of the race to earn his fourth All-Star Race victory, which set a new NASCAR record.

In other NASCAR news: On Wednesday, The NASCAR Hall of Fame announced the class of 2014 inductees. There were a total of 25 drivers on this year’s list of possible inductees which included a few familiar names making their first appearance on the ballot. Those drivers are: Maurice Petty, brother and crew chief to Richard Petty, Dale Jarrett, Larry Phillips, Rex White who is the oldest living NASCAR Champion, and everybody’s favorite Bruton Smith who announced this week he is 70% sure he is moving Charlotte’s October race to Las Vegas Motor Speedway. I know the city officials in Concord are rooting Bruton on to make next year’ class. As of Wednesday at noon, the list of inductees had not been announced.

Don’t forget that Speed Street is going on this weekend in Downtown Charlotte. You can just about see and do anything that has to do with racing at the annual festival. There will be driver appearances and autograph sessions, food vendors, games for the kids, and nightly concerts by national recording artists such as Sister Hazel and Jamey Johnson.

Many race teams are holding their annual fan festivals this weekend so check out your favorite team’s website and see what they’re offering. If you are going to the race this Sunday have a great time and be safe. I hope that everybody has a wonderful Memorial Day.

Prediction for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway: Will it be Kyle, Kurt, Kasey, or Jimmie? You can’t go wrong with Jimmie but picking him each time is boring. I would love to see Furniture Row Racing back in victory lane so for that reason I am going with Kurt Busch.

Hospice Cleveland County is pleased to announce that four staff members have achieved certification in their profession. Dr. Sangnya Patel achieved National Certification for Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Anna Hamrick achieved National Certification for Hospice and Palliative Nurse Practitioners. They are among the ranks of over 18,000 individuals certified in the specialty of hospice and palliative care services. Obtaining certification includes hours of rigorous studies and passing a national exam. Achieving National Certification ensures the integrity of quality hospice and palliative care for patients.

Rachel Hill and Kathryn Spangler have achieved board certification by the National Association of Professional Chaplains. A Board Certified Chaplain must have a Masters of Divinity from an accredited school, must have at least four units of Clinical Pastoral Education, must be endorsed and ordained as a minister in their denomination. They must have at least 2000 hours of clinical chaplaincy in a professional setting and pass written and oral competencies. In June, Rachel and Kathryn will travel to Orlando, Florida to receive their certificates at the National Conference for the Association of Professional Chaplains.

“Hospice Cleveland County takes pride in the fact that over 50% of our eligible registered nurses are certified in hospice and palliative care and many others are currently working towards certification”, said Patti Ellis McMurry, Vice President of Access. “We want our hospice to be the gold standard in providing excellent care. Certification is an indication that our staff members are willing to go the extra mile to be the very best they can be!”

Evangelist W.C. “Dub” Dellinger

We try to out smart our Lord in choosing teachers and preachers. Sometimes this writer does not think we stop and think in order to give the Lord a chance to do His will. I listened to one preacher and after she was through I asked her what she did to become a preacher. When she got through I knew why Jesus’ being reborn was never mentioned in the sermon. It was all talk. No mention of the spirit. When we set up our way of doing things it stops the movement of the Lord. Let’s get some advice from 1 Corinthians 1:19. Paul says, “For it is written I will destroy the widsom of the wise.” He says it will perish because they just depend on it, (Isaiah 29:14), not on the Lord for what to say and do. In verse 20 he says, “Hath God not made foolish the wisdom of this world.” The key for doing right for you Savior is to first be saved. Then let Him do the calling. Verse 25, “Because of the foolishness God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” The Bible points out that not many wise men after the flesh are called. I went and talked to a man plowing a field late one afternoon in Lincolnton. That night he came and spoke to us and he did not have to open his Bible. For six nights we heard the Bible. Paul says in essence, “When I came to you not with perfect speech but to tell you of the testimony of God.” All I wanted to tell you was all sin must be gone and that you could be in Heaven the same as everyone else who has given their life to Jesus. Paul was just a choosen man as other people are choosen by God. You will notice that Paul did not go out until he was sure of his calling. This is a very big lesson to learn, Just think about it. I have spoken to some that do not understand what being called to preach by the Lord has to do with it. Hebrew and Latin is not the Answer as I have been told

What’s Up with Thinkin’ Bout It

With Vincent D. Hefner, Pastor of First Baptist Church, Cherryville

The first memory I have of honey bees is watching my grandfather work with his bees. I was only 5 years old, and he put on a hat with a veil (no gloves), took off the tops of the hives and got the honey. I wasn’t close enough to actually see how he did it, but I sure did love the honey that he gave to my family. To be honest, I was afraid of the bees, but I had a good reason. During my childhood I was taken to the emergency room on two different occasions because of an allergic reaction to a bee sting. It’s a terrifying feeling when your tongue and throat swell up and you can’t breath. However, one needle full of medicine fixed me up both times, and I lived to tell the tale. I have been told that you can outgrow allergic reactions to bee stings, and I hope that is the truth, because I have been keeping bees for over fifteen years. These past few years have been difficult for beekeepers, because of some mysterious plague that has caused honey bees to vanish or the hives to die. I have lost several hives over the years, but I also seem to keep a couple alive and well.

There are a couple of ways a beekeeper can get more bees. The first way is to buy them from another beekeeper. This way is expensive and risky, because you don’t know how old the queen is, or if the hive has an illness, but you have bees to play with and look after throughout the summer. The second way to get honey bees is to catch a swarm. A swarm of honey bees comes about when a hive develops two queens and they split. The older queen will take the younger worker bees while the new queen says home with the older worker bees. I received a phone call last week about a man who had a swarm of bees in his backyard and he wanted me to come and get them. I was extremely excited because first, they were free, and second, well…they were free. It’s not that easy to find swarms, and when you get the chance to get one, don’t pass it up! A swarm of bees can land on a bush, a cement statue, or even at the top of a 30 foot tree. If they are too high in a tree, I leave them alone because it is not worth the risk, even if they are free.

Something happened to me a few days ago that took me totally by surprise. It was Sunday morning after church and I was walking home and noticed thousands of honey bees flying around my garage. I remembered that I had taken out some racks that had some honey in them out of a super and left them in the garage. I figured some honey bees had stumbled on to my mistake and had come to claim the honey. I walked into the middle of thousands of honey bees and watched them come and go from my garage. It was an awesome scene! I had to leave for a few hours, but when I returned I went back to my garage to see if the honey bees had gone back home. To my surprise, they had found a new home, inside one of my unused supers in my garage! For years I have searched high and low for swarms of honey bees, but this was the first time a swarm had found me! Does this make me the “Bee Charmer?” I’m not sure, but it does make me one happy bee keeper. I realize that some people would see thousands of bees in their garage as a curse, but I see it as a blessing. I can honestly say that blessings can come in all sorts of ways and at all times. If you look hard enough, you will find countless blessings God has placed in your life. Ephesians 1:3 tells us, “”Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.” Take a few moments today and consider all the wonderful gifts God has blessed you with throughout your life, and if you are a believer, consider all the blessings He has in store for you in eternity.
